What are Chiropractic Adjustments?

Chiropractic adjustments are a procedure that uses a small instrument or the chiropractor's hands to apply either gentle or sudden force to the spinal joints. During the procedure, the patient often lies face down on a padded table while the chiropractor manually adjusts the spine. While there are more than 100 spinal manipulation techniques, chiropractors generally use seven main adjustment treatments.

  • The Gonstead Adjustment readjusts the spine with a hands-on technique to help restore maximum mobility through the alignment of the discs. The Gonstead Adjustment is excellent for reducing pain and inflammation, improves recovery time, and assists in maintaining the proper function of the nervous system.
  • Activator Treatments use a hand-held instrument that pulses quickly to apply force to the vertebrae, restoring motion to the vertebrae and joints. Activator Treatments are generally used for lower back pain, neck pain, and migraines.
  • Flexion-Distraction Treatments use a specialized table to gently move the lower part of the body in slow, repetitive motions that help alleviate pressure off the spinal nerves. Flexion-Distraction is excellent in treating lumbar disc injuries, scoliosis, arthritis, sciatica, and leg and neck pain.
  • Thompson Technique Treatments are also known as drop techniques and utilize low amplitude, high-velocity adjustments to improve spinal stability, relieve pain, improve sleep, and restore normal function of the nerves.
  • Logan Basic Technique Treatments apply pressure to the sacral bone to realign the spine and pelvic muscles and release tension in the body.
  • Diversified Technique Treatments use direct, rapid thrusts to the spine to allow the spinal fluid to flow freely, restore circulation, and help with spinal alignment. This treatment is effective for patients with whiplash, lumbar disc herniation, and misaligned bones and joints.
  • Soft Tissue Therapy Treatments focus on the soft tissues of the body. Dr. Gross or Dr. James will conduct a clinical massage that can help improve blood flow, increase circulation, and release toxins.
